Central Office Compensation Bill Approved By House State & Local Government Committee

HB 56 will require each local board of education to publish and maintain on their website no later than August 15, 2025, (and annually thereafter) central office total compensation from all funding sources. While salary information is public record now, there is no requirement that it be published and maintained on school district websites.
Bill sponsor Rep. Erin Pare (R-Wake) presented the bill and stated that it is a taxpayer transparency bill designed to provide more information to the public about compensation.
Rep. Pare stated that she received only positive feedback about the bill at the time of the committee.
In her presentation to the committee, Rep. Pare noted that the required compensation website details will just list the position and compensation but not the employee’s name.
Rep. Ray Jeffers (D-Durham) noted that in smaller districts or specialized positions, the public will be able to determine the employee based on their listed title.
The bill has now been referred to the House K-12 Education Committee for consideration.
